Worldview Roundup

One of the places that breeds a parasite in our world is a place called “The Self Center.” This is a place that quickly needs to be evacuated, condemned and demolished. It was a relic constructed on the mindset of The Beat Generation world of Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Burrows with streams of consciousness flowing on rolls of paper. (How Poetic) This is the type of construction that decays quickly, and is the first one to be targeted in a Soul Renewal project we call Evangelical Lifestyle.

Physically the walls came down in Denver in 1989 when a group of crack houses and prostitution were bought out by suburban churches to form the rehabilitation and safe house district from Open Door Fellowship. I was excited when that happened and I was asked to lead worship a few blocks away, when Southern Gables and Bear Creek Baptist rebuilt the walls of brick and mortar and where hundred of people have rebuilt their lives- by tearing down “The Self-Center.” We all have been to this center and to some degree wrestle with its demons from time to time. The Catch 22 is that we need  one another and in “The Center” there’s no room for one another.

Much has been made about whether or not Evangelicals should be involved in issues that closely  come close to politics. however Political Action Groups, radio talk show s and pro-life groups have been the bane of liberal and relativist activists for over two decades with mixed results. Newsweek magazine devoted a cover story on the  “end of Christian influence in America,” and while that may seem the case “rumors of death are greatly exaggerated.” The truth is that Evangelicals in America have had a history of “working out their salvation,” yet it has been in seasons. This season is a time of rebirth and that is one thing that Born-Again Christians have over any other lifestyle. Not to reinvent, or reconstruct as a reader pointed out to me last week, but to flat out find new life-in Christ. If pride comes before a fall, new life comes from dying to ourselves. And if dying to oneself, you find life, the  in fellowship you find revival.

In our culture there is a role-reversal going on. While Christianity is not a brand, it is moreover a relational experience and as it becomes that it is not a religion-Evangelicals can take great hope of finding a new lifestyle and once saved it is difficult to come out of that lifestyle! On the other hand the arrogance of “progressives” are closer to the definition of religious fanatical philosophies. They worship a god (small g intended) that looks like them, as opposed to being created in His (God’s image). Their devotions from the mindsets of free-thinkers and the gay and lesbian fund are tragically aligned with influencing the government by legislating immorality. Not by vote but my judicial legislation- Hello?

The battle ground for this “religion” is being fought at the altar of self-worship, to the god of revisionist history and language. Their god calls love-hate and hate-love and life-death, and death-life. Their god represents the sacraments of money, lust and power and their theology is immorality. Their influence is being spewed out to the fields of media, education, social work, the arts, on Main Street, Wall Street and even Church Street. It is a religion that is being forced on our culture.

From Denver the Evangelical Lifestyle will prevail in defending by prayer, in worship and in Fellowship in influencing and impacting our culture by tearing down our “Self Centers.”
